In Robert S.S. Baden-Powell's 1908 Scouting For Boys  he introduced badges for achievement. The highest available was the Wolf Badge. It is said that Baden-Powell got the idea of awards from the American naturalist Ernest Thompson Seaton, who passed along the ideas from his Red Indian Boy Scouts of America.

Persistent request to recognize the American Eagle resulted in the renaming of the highest rank for the Boy Scouts of America to Eagle in 1912.
